In During a voluntary blood donation in 2014, the nurse at the blood‑donation center asked her whether she would like to become a volunteer for hematopoietic stem cell donation. That casual remark piqued Yan Hua’s curiosity; she sought more information from the nurse and subsequently joined the Chinese Marrow Donor Program, becoming a proud volunteer for hematopoietic stem cell donation. In March 2024, she received a call from Red Cross staff informing her that she had been matched with a patient whose hematopoietic stem cells were a perfect match, and that an urgent donation was needed to save a life. Fueled by the belief that great love can sustain life, she agreed without hesitation.

Afterward, she cooperated fully with the Red Cross’s procedures, undergoing initial screening, further mobilization, high-resolution HLA typing, and a comprehensive medical examination, before finally entering the stem cell collection phase. When she finally received notification from the Red Cross that she could proceed with donating hematopoietic stem cells, she felt both elated and somewhat apprehensive: elated because she could save another person’s life through this act of donation, but apprehensive about her family’s opposition. As expected, upon learning the news, her relatives grew deeply concerned for her health; many cautioned that donating hematopoietic stem cells might leave lasting side effects and harm her well-being. To persuade her loved ones, she researched extensively and consulted volunteers who had previously donated stem cells, all of whom reported no adverse effects.
